Alberta sugar beet growers prove farm sustainability is a top priority

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta sugar beet growers have proven that farm sustainability is one of their top priorities.

For two years, the organization representing local sugar beet growers has been utilizing the Farm Sustainability Assessment, or FSA to determine on-farm performance.

Some growers recently answered a 112 question survey spanning 17 topics, from soil management to chemicals and fertilizers to labour conditions and more, to see how they were complying with recommended practices.

Several farmers were also audited this fall to further confirm that best practices were being followed.

Because of those action, the Alberta Sugar Beet Growers has received silver-level verification from the FSA.

The organization’s Executive Director, Melody Garner-Skiba, adds that farm sustainability is paramount to the future of the ag industry.
