Intersection safety focus for Lethbridge Police during January

LETHBRIDGE, AB. – Awareness on intersection safety is a major focus for Lethbridge Police right now.

LPS say on average, 64 people die and another 8,000 are injured in collisions at intersections in Alberta each year.

Some of the most common errors drivers make are: following too closely; making an unsafe left turn; disregarding a stop sign; and running a red light.

When excessive speed is added into the mix, the likelihood of a collision increases.

Police says enforcement alone isn’t enough to make intersections safer. They’re asking you to make safe driving decisions and pay closer attention.

LPS note the onus is on all users of our roads to be diligent.

Here are some tips to stay safe while driving though intersections:

  • Always look before proceeding through an intersection – remember the road is also shared with pedestrians.
  • Leave an abundance of room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of yours.
  • Ensure it is safe to turn left, before making the turn.
  • Ensure you come to a complete stop at red lights and stop signs.
  • Adjust your driving for the road conditions.
