EDMONTON, AB – It looks like the province’s current financial situation won’t be the main target for the Alberta government this spring.
Budget 2021 will be tabled Thursday in the legislature. A government news release says the focus will be on strengthening the health care system to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and create jobs for economic recovery.
Premier Jason Kenney says Alberta’s government is “laser-focused” on protecting lives and livelihoods this legislative session. “I’m looking forward to debating the upcoming budget that supports the health-care system with historic investments while creating thousands of new jobs and laying the foundation for a strong economic recovery.”
In addition to Budget 2021, the United Conservative government will introduce legislation on MLA recall and citizens’ initiatives, support for Alberta non-profit organizations, and further protections from dangerous offenders and unprompted street checks during the spring 2021 sitting.
After the budget is introduced, the legislature will break for the following week and then return for budget estimates, where MLAs will debate and scrutinize each department’s budget.
