City funding immediate upgrades at Lethbridge Airport

The City of Lethbridge officially takes over ownership of the airport on July 1st and they’re not wasting any time making changes.

Council voted Monday (June 24) to approve $700,000 to fund immediate upgrades at YQL including better washrooms, parking, and even new terminal seating.

Mayor Chris Spearman says this is all about enhancing the traveler experience. “Upgrading some of these basic facilities within the terminal will improve the travel experience in the short term. We know that our airport is continuing to see increased air passenger traffic and we want to ensure we do everything we can to keep that growth moving in the right direction.”

Passenger traffic at Lethbridge Airport has increased more than 80% in the past year, due in part to additional service from WestJet and the use of bigger aircraft from Air Canada.

Upgrades will also include increasing the size of the secure hold room, the addition of accessible washrooms in the secure hold area, parking upgrades, and more.

That roughly $700,000 cost and will be funded through the Pay-as-You-Go Community program. Preparations for the upgrades will done as soon as possible.
