City working to reduce odours coming from wastewater treatment plant

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Staff at Lethbridge’s Wastewater Treatment Plant are doing everything they can to reduce the stinky smells that residents have been complaining about.

The plant’s digester process was upset at the end of October, releasing excess material into the lagoons, which has caused odour problems ever since.

The City says staff are now monitoring the lagoons and the digester every day, and some new strategies are being implemented to reprocess, chemically treat and remove the stinky material.

As the digesters recover and the lagoons freeze over for the winter, residents should start to notice improvements in the air soon.
