Alberta drivers must report stolen licence plates before requesting a new one

LETHBRIDGE, AB – If your licence plate is stolen or lost, starting January 19th, you’ll have to report it to police before requesting a replacement plate from Alberta registry agents.

The province says early reporting of lost or stolen plates allows police to be on alert for licence plates that may be used for illegal purposes.

Calgary Police Chief and President of the Association of Alberta Chiefs of Police, Mark Neufeld, says mandatory reporting of lost and stolen licence plates will go a long way to making life more difficult for thieves and help keep Albertans safe.

Over 46,000 replacement licence plates were issued in 2020 to Albertans whose previous plates were lost or stolen. Well over 15,000 were noted as stolen.
