Major focus for City Council remains on growing Lethbridge Airport

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A new incentive framework aims to further raise the profile of the Lethbridge Airport.

City Council endorsed the document this week.

The main goals are encouraging continued growth of passenger traffic at YQL, establishing new routes, and improving net operating profits.

This new framework is being welcomed by the City’s Director of Corporate and Customer Service. Lisa Trent says since acquiring the airport from the County four years ago, the City’s goal has been to enhance and expand operations.

“Having City Council’s leadership and support is essential as we have further conversations with airlines about the importance of future travel options at the Lethbridge Airport and positioning it as a regional hub,” said Trent.

City Council also approved creating a fund, not to exceed one million dollars, to facilitate negotiations to discuss potential agreements with airlines regarding future options for passengers flying in and out of Lethbridge.

Despite the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lethbridge Airport saw a massive 228% increase in passenger movements in the third quarter of 2021 when compared to the same period in 2020.
