LPS looks for witness and victim services volunteers

The Lethbridge Police Service is looking for new volunteers for witness and victim services. The first-response team of crisis support workers is going into its annual recruitment process and is looking for about 20 people to add to the team.

Police say it takes about 60 people to ensure the team can deliver 24 hour crisis support, every day of the year.

“Whether you are looking to become a police officer or counsellor down the road and want some experience, are a retiree looking for a great way to connect with the community, or just have a desire to support your fellow members of the community, there is a place for you within Victim/Witness Services Unit,” says program manager Catherine Pooley. She adds she wants the team to be a strong reflection of the diversity in the city.

While there is no specific experience required, the unit looks for individuals who are 18 or over, have a clear criminal record and an eagerness to provide acute crisis care for people in all walks of life who have been victims of crime, trauma or tragedy.

It also wants people willing to learn and join the team for training opportunities and a dedication to support LPS by providing trauma-informed, client centred care for victims both on scenes and on the phone.

Applications are being accepted until Oct. 10 and can be filled out online.
