Special air quality statement issued as wildfire smoke blankets Lethbridge region

Environment Canada along with Alberta Health have issued a special air quality statement as smoke from a number of fires in BC has blanketed much of southern Alberta, including the City of Lethbridge.

Officials say not only is the smoke impacting air quality, which is forecast to fluctuate between moderate and high risk on Sunday, but could also reduce visibility for those travelling.

People in the region could experience things like increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

According to wildfire smoke forecast website Firesmoke.ca, the at times thick smoke is likely to stay in the area until late Monday or early Tuesday before dissipating slightly.
