Majority of Ostriches safely captured by owner, police after running free in Taber

Vauxhall-Taber RCMP say as many as 20 ostriches escaped from their enclosure near Taber and they roamed freely in the town and surrounding area Thursday morning.

On Thursday morning. police in the municipality found themselves dealing with several ostrich within towns limits, before the group made their way out of town where they created traffic hazards. Authorities say they went on to assist the RCMP in confining the animals so the owners could safely capture the majority of them.

No human injuries were reported as a result of the animals running loose. However, RCMP has confirmed that one of the animals was struck and killed by a vehicle on a roadway.

As of 1 p.m., Thursday two ostriches remain unaccounted for.
