AUPE members rally against Bill 9 in front of Lethbridge Provincial Building

Members of Alberta’s largest sector union were rallying outside the Lethbridge Provincial Building Wednesday in protest of Bill 9.

The legislation, passed about a month ago, defers wage arbitration talks for thousands of nurses, teachers and government workers until the fall.

The unionized workers affected by Bill 9 accepted pay freezes with the promise they could reopen wage talks this year.

Vice President of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, Susan Slade, tells MyLethbridgeNow.com the government broke its contract in passing the Wage Arbitration Deferral Act.

She also says she has no reason to believe talks will go ahead in November.

Some signs being displayed by protestors in Wednesday’s information picket read ” UCP W.T.F??” and “R.E.S.P.E.C.T. the Deal.”

The AUPE filed a statement of claim against the provincial government at the end of June.
