Special air quality statement issued for Lethbridge and region

A special air quality statement has been issued for Lethbridge and region, because of smoke in the air from the wildfires burning across central and northern Alberta, along with parts of B.C.

According to Environment Canada, “Wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health even at low concentrations.” Residents are being advised to limit their exposure by reducing time outside and taking a break from the smoke by spending in a space with clean cool air.

Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk of experiencing health effects from the smoke including increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches and shortness of breath.

Officials say air quality conditions are expected to improve on Wednesday.
