Inconclusive: Cause of West Nile at Birds of Prey Centre

An independent report into the death of some high profile birds at the Birds of Prey Centre last summer is inconclusive.

The report was presented at a special meeting of Coaldale Town Council Monday (July 29).

It states there is no conclusive evidence to show where the outbreak of West Nile virus actually came from. You read the full report here: Coaldale West Nile Virus Review

A total of 15 raptor birds died during that outbreak last August. It was first believed infected moquitoes came from stagnant pools of water which formed during construction of the Malloy basin, however that can’t be proven.

Solstice Environmental Management says, in its report, it could not identify a clear source of transmission of West Nile in this case “as birds can be exposed to the virus from several possible routes.”

The Town of Coaldale saying on Twitter Tuesday that it’s motivated to find solution-based strategies and support public involvement to lower the risk of West Nile Virus in Lethbridge County.
