Perseid meteor shower peaks overnight Monday

The best meteor shower of the year is set to peak overnight Monday.

The Perseid meteor shower runs from July 17th to August 26th but peaks overnight when around 100 meteors per hour will be produced.

University of Lethbridge Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy, Dr. Locke Spencer says it’s due to the earth passing through a comet trail.

He says dust and debris are pulled into the atmosphere where they then speed up and heat up, turning into a “shooting star.”

If it’s a clear night, Spencer says you’ll want to head out to a dark location away from street lights and look up toward the big and little dippers.

Unfortunately, the forecast for Lethbridge Monday night calls for clouds and possible showers.
