Federal funding for Indigenous languages in southern Alberta

The federal government is investing more than $1.5 million to support Indigenous-based language projects in southern Alberta.

The money will be used for things like language and cultural camps, language classes, and the publishing of resources such as training modules and children’s books.

Funding will be given out to 17 projects including the Blackfoot Canadian Cultural Society, Opokaa’sin Early Learning Centre, and Friends Society of the Galt Museum all in Lethbridge.

Money is also heading to Stand Off for the Kainai Transition Centre and Ninistako Centre.

The Liberal government says it’s committed to taking action to help preserve, promote, and revitalize Indigenous languages.

These projects will cover five languages: Blackfoot, Dene, Stoney Nakoda, Tsuut’ina and Michif.
