UPDATE 9:30 am (Sept. 3): From Lethbridge County: UPDATE to Monday’s train derailment at Highway 23 and Township Road 12-0. Highway 23 is now open to traffic.

BACKGROUND:
A train derailment Monday morning (Sept. 2) near Barons is causing traffic delays.
Lethbridge County says the train jumped the tracks just after 10:00 am at Highway 23 and Township Road 12-0 south of Barons.
The rail cars are leaking a fuel known as octane. Fire crews are on scene trying to contain the leak.
As of now, the highway is closed in that area and traffic is being rerouted westbound. Â That section of Highway 23 is expected to be closed for a while.
People area asked to take an alternate route if traveling around Barons today.
Lethbridge County will provide more information when available.
