Calls for service, in and around Supervised Consumption Site, keeping police busy

It appears Lethbridge’s Supervised Consumption Site is, at times, putting a strain on police resources.

Acting Chief Scott Woods telling the Lethbridge Police Commission this week that calls for service at the SCS and surrounding area are keeping officers extremely busy.

He says police were called to the facility 420 times in its first year of operation.

Woods says the city is broken down into quadrants that the LPS tries to staff equally, but sometimes resources need to be pulled away from other areas to deal with issues in and around the SCS.

He says what’s more concerning to police and likely to citizens in the area, is the 250% increase in calls to the area around the facility where law-abiding citizens are being victimized by car prowlings and break-and-enters.

Woods says the LPS will have to look at different options in deployment to try to deal with some of those issues.
