Charges laid following turkey farm protest near Fort Macleod

RCMP have now laid charges in connection to a recent protest at the Jumbo Valley Turkey Farm near Fort Macleod.

Back on September 2nd, several animal activists illegally gained access to a barn on a Hutterite colony to protest what they say are injustices on some factory farms.

Four people, 24 year old Kennadi Herbert of Pincher Creek, 28 year old Claire Buchanan of Calgary, 46 year old Maxwell Mah of Edmonton and a 16 year old youth are facing charges of break and enter to commit mischief.

Fort Macleod RCMP say when they arrived at the farm that morning, officers located several people who had entered the barn area unlawfully.

The protesters alleged industries like the Jumbo Valley Turkey Farm treat individual animals disrespectfully to make a profit, something the farm has denied.

All four will appear in court in Fort Macleod November 15th.

The protest even caught the attention of Premier Jason Kenney. The UCP government has said it plans to introduce legislation aimed at safeguarding farms from illegal protests.
