Southern Alberta crops 90% combined but frost causes sugar beet harvest to fall behind

It appears harvest is close to wrapping up for many farmers in southern Alberta.

The latest Alberta Crop Report for October 22nd shows crops are, in total, about 90 per cent combined.

That’s right in line with the ten year average of 92 per cent and way ahead of where harvest was at this time last year at only 74 per cent complete.

However, regional assessments show there is frost damage to potatoes, dry beans and sugar beets.

Sugar beets are far behind at only 18 per cent harvested compared to 61 per cent for the five-year average due to storage issues resulting from the frost.

Province-wide, crops are about 75 per cent combined.
