Special Air Quality Statement

LETHBRIDGE, AB – This extremely hot weather is causing another issue, bad air quality in some places.

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for Claresholm, Stavely, Vulcan, Brooks, and Calgary areas.

The weather office says stagnant weather conditions under a ridge of high pressure are causing pollutants at the surface to build up with time and that will likely cause air quality issues in those regions.

The poor air quality is expected to improve into Tuesday and make become an issue in the evenings again.

From Environment Canada:

Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

People with lung diseases, such as asthma and COPD, can be particularly sensitive to air pollution. They will generally experience more serious health effects at lower levels. Pollution can aggravate their diseases, leading to increased medication use, doctor and emergency room visits, and hospital visits.

Active people of all ages who exercise or work outdoors are at increased risk to the health effects posed by air pollution. Be air aware and know the best times to be active outdoors by using the AQHI to plan your day.
