LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta’s 17 largest communities were spending more sustainably in 2020, according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), but unfair property taxes remain a top concern for residents and businesses.
The latest edition of the CFIB’s Alberta Municipal Watch Report shows that operating spending was down in 15 out of 17 of the largest municipalities in 2020. Lethbridge was one of those, decreasing spending by about 3% last year.
However, local businesses are still bearing most of the property tax burden here. The CFIB ranked Lethbridge as the 5th worst for property tax fairness out of 17 municipalities.
Okotoks reported the biggest drop in spending last year with a decrease of 21.5%, and Leduc had almost equal property taxes between residents and businesses.
