“Best meteor shower of the year” set to peak December 13-14

LETHBRIDGE, AB – If the sky is clear early next week, you might get a glimpse of the best meteor shower of the year.

The Geminids happen every December when a 5.1 kilometre wide asteroid orbits close to the sun.

According to NASA, Earth passes through debris trails left by comets and asteroids which collide with our atmosphere and disintegrate into fiery streaks in the sky.

The Geminids can usually be spotted between December 4th and 17th, but this year they’ll peak overnight on Monday and into Tuesday morning.

However, NASA says this shower is considered one of the best opportunities for young viewers since it starts around 9 pm or 10 pm.

For optimal viewing, head away from the city lights.
