Active COVID cases in Lethbridge increase five-fold in less than two weeks

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge has seen a dramatic rise in the number of active COVID-19 cases through the holidays.

On Dec. 22 there were 94 active cases and now, less than two weeks later, the number has risen to 503.

In total, 350 people in Lethbridge tested positive for the virus between Dec. 29 and Jan. 3 out of 777 positive cases in the South Zone of Alberta Health Services.

Regional hospitalizations have remained fairly stable thus far with 44 people admitted in the South Zone because of COVID – three of them in the ICU.

There hasn’t been a COVID-related death in southern Alberta since Dec. 14 though there were 12 reported over the past six days including a child between the ages of 5 and 9.

Provincial positivity rates between Dec. 29 and Jan. 3 ranged from 28-36% and there are now more than 34,000 active cases in Alberta.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw also reported on Tuesday that hospitalizations are starting to increase as cases continue to spike.

No new public health restrictions have been announced.
