Lethbridge School Division ready to welcome kids back to class

Students will be heading back to school on September 6, and the Lethbridge School Division is getting ready to welcome students back.

Dr. Cheryl Gilmore, superintendent of the Lethbridge School Division, says even though there are no current provincial health restrictions or mandates, the schools are well prepared with measures being taken to ensure everyone’s safety.

“Our schools certainly have the close monitoring of cleanliness and encouragement of hand sanitization, and of course constant monitoring of our filtration systems and ongoing maintenance of those. So we feel we’re in a great space in terms of being safe and healthy for children and staff to walk in those doors,” says Gilmore.

Gilmore says that the division will be following the guidance of Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services, should there be any drastic changes.

Bus routes have been updated and are available for viewing on the Southland Transportation Ltd. website. School offices opened on August 24, and parents are encouraged to visit the specific website of their child’s school for information on the first week of school, staggered entry dates, and school supply lists.

Gilmore adds that, while they have a good amount of staff heading into the school year, they’re always looking for more help.

“We’re ready to go. There’s always some positions that need to be filled as things happen later in the summer and so, if you look on our website, there’s a few positions advertised. But overall, certainly, we’re currently set up for our teaching staff,” says Gilmore.

The division’s Board of Trustees is also advocating for the continued development
of a modern curriculum, one that they believe meets the needs of today’s students.
