Late day storm Thursday produces tornado near Vulcan

It was a wild late afternoon north of Lethbridge when a severe thunderstorm spawned a tornado in the Vulcan and Lomond areas.

Photos posted to social media showed a twister on the ground around 5:15 pm Thursday (July 18). Environment Canada issued tornado warnings around the same time with reports of tornadoes near Picture Butte and Enchant as well as Vulcan and Lomond.

At this time there haven’t been reports of any major damage from the tornado, although a Hutterite colony near Carmangay did see some wind damage as the storm rolled through.

The weather office had issued watches and advisories indicating that same storm was not only producing a twister, but also ping-pong sized hail and very heavy rainfall.

Cell phones were also buzzing with emergency weather alerts.

All tornado warnings ended across southern Alberta by around 7:00 pm.
