Southern Alberta warning of fake jewellery scams from travellers

The Southern Alberta RCMP are advising the public that there is a group of individuals travelling around the area conducting gold and jewellery scams.

According to police, these individuals are approaching people in parking lots, gas stations, or other public locations and typically offering fake gold jewellery for sale as gifts, or to trade in exchange for gas. This jewellery however, is not genuine and are low-priced.

Suspects usually provide a story along the lines of losing their bank card, having a broken card or are unable to access their funds to continue their trip. They’re typically driving newer rental vehicles and may sometimes have children with them.

Officials have also reported instances were electronics are also being sold.

So far, incidents have taken place between March 2 and 14, 2023.

RCMP are asking the public to report any similar incidents and to be aware of the ever-changing scams that are around the area.
