Environment Canada confirms six tornado touchdowns in Lethbridge region on Wednesday

Environment Canada has confirmed six tornadoes and funnel clouds touched down near Lethbridge on Wednesday.

As of 10:20 p.m. Thursday, June 15th the federal weather agency reported between four tornadoes were confirmed near Iron Springs Wednesday between 2:30 and 3 p.m., while an additional two were confirmed near Enchant between 3:15 and 3:30 p.m. As of Thursday night, a total of 10 tornados were confirmed across the province, with the last one being recorded at 6 p.m. Wednesday near Cabin Lake.

According to Environment Canada, these are approximate times, and “all tornadoes have been given a preliminary rating of EF-0, with only minor damage reported at this time.” The provincial weather authority along with the Northern Tornadoes Project is continuing to investigate this weather event along with the cause. Anyone who has information regarding damage from these tornadoes or photos is being asked to share them by emailing [email protected] or post them to Twitter using #abstorm.

At 2:38 p.m. Wednesday Environment Canada issued a tornado watch for Lethbridge and surrounding communities, with a Tornado warning being issued for parts of Lethbridge County and the M.D. of Taber, including Enchant.

Meteorologists tracked severe thunderstorms as they travelled northeast from the Picture Butte area. Residents and those in the area took to social media posting sightings of a funnel cloud, with more posts circulating as the storm travelled to the north.
