Garbage truck fires spark battery disposal reminder

Two recent fires inside garbage trucks sparked a reminder from the city to properly dispose of batteries.

Both were caused by lithium-ion batteries being put into black waste carts and the city says there were no injuries and minimal damage caused.

The city uploaded a video of one of the fires to its YouTube page to show the danger of improper disposal.

“Batteries, including devices that contain batteries such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets, are not accepted in the garbage, recycling or organics carts. When improperly disposed, batteries can get crushed by equipment or come into contact with metal,” reads a notice from the city. “This can lead to fires in collection trucks, the material recovery (recycling) facility, or organics processing facility at the Waste and Recycling Centre.”

Electronics and batteries can be dropped off at the Waste and Recycling Centre.
