Winston Churchill’s Class of ’74 reaching out to classmates for this summer’s 50th reunion

Reunited and it feels so good! The Class of 1974 from Winston Churchill High School is celebrating its 50th reunion this summer and there’s a callout to all past classmates to get in touch and attend the event for an unforgettable weekend of catching up.

“We’re trying to get a hold of as many former classmates as possible from 1974. We’ve got 79 on our Facebook page now,” says reunion committee chair John Voort. Over 40 classmates have either registered or paid for the reunion.

“We had a class of around 150. We had 21 pass away on us already, sadly. We’ve got about another 40 or 50 we want to get a hold of,” adds Voort.

Committee member Carol Quan says the committee is very excited about celebrating 50 years. “It’s very special. Some of us went to the class last year that had their 50th and it really inspired us that it’s a great thing to do.”

“People had so much fun. There’s just something about reunions that brings people together. Even if you weren’t the best of friends in high school, you see somebody now, and catch up. It was really a wonderful experience. John thought it was a good idea for us to do that and got a great committee together,” adds Quan.

The committee, says Quan, is trying to reach out to as many people as it can. “But it’s tough. People have moved away, got married and changed their lives. We don’t want to miss anybody because we think it’s going to be a great weekend.”

Voort says the reunion will take place July 12-13 with plenty of activities to keep everyone busy and engaged. “On Friday afternoon from 2-4 p.m., the Winston Churchill principal has graciously opened the school for a tour, so that’s exciting. From 6-10 p.m., we’re going to have a meet and greet at the Westminster Community Hall.”

On Saturday, from 12 p.m. until closing at the Rotary Picnic Shelter at the Lethbridge Sports Park there will be a get-together to rekindle friendships and party like it’s 1974.

As a committee, Voort says, the group has been trying to get a hold of a lot of people. “We’ve been talking to folks we haven’t actually talked to for 49-and-a-half years and rekindling friendships already.”
