City, Police meeting with Solicitor General in September to advocate for local SCAN unit

Alberta’s Solicitor General will be in Lethbridge next month to consider implementing a specialized local unit to help snuff out drug houses.

The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods unit, or SCAN as it’s known, is part of the Alberta Sheriffs. It deals with problem properties that are being used for specific illegal activity.

Mayor Chris Spearman tells MyLethbridgeNow.com that he will be helping out with the review, which is scheduled for Sept. 16. “I’ll be talking to the police about providing the evidence and justification for that in terms of the number of drug houses in the city of Lethbridge.”

He adds that information is also needed from residents. “If [you] are aware of a suspected drug house in [your] neighbourhood, could [you] please let the police know, maybe let the mayor know.

We want to stop the supply of drugs in to the city of Lethbridge, not just the person on the street.”

Just last week (Aug. 19), City Council unanimously passed a motion to send a letter to the province advocating for a Lethbridge SCAN unit.

I started my radio career in 2015, shortly after graduating from Lethbridge College. I have a very strong passion for local news. Proudly born in 1994, I grew up most of my life in Sylvan Lake, AB and I've lived in the Lethbridge since 2012. I'm a below average golfer on a good day, I take as many hiking trips to Waterton as possible in the summer and I love my two cats, Outlaw and Jynx, and my dog, Maverick, more than most people I know. I look forward to providing accurate, timely news coverage in southern Alberta for plenty of years to come!
