Mount Crandall area closed following bear attack

The Mount Crandall area in Waterton Lakes National Park is closed following a bear attack earlier in the week.

According to a statement from Parks Canada two hikers were attacked Tuesday afternoon while scrambling up Ruby Ridge when they encountered the bear. The bear is said to have attacked both hikers and bear spray was used to stop the attack long enough for both individuals to get away.

The release reads “The two people hiked out from the location of the attack and were transported via ambulance to a local hospital in stable condition.”

According to officials the bear has not been located and they are still uncertain as to the species of the bear that attacked the hikers.

As a result, Parks Canada has closed hiking trails and campgrounds around Mount Crandell to the public. This includes Crandell Lake Trail, Crandell Lake Campground Crandell Mountain Campground, and Canyon Church Camp are closed. Also closed is Ruby Ridge to the north slopes of Mount Blakiston including Ruby Falls and Ruby Lake and Lineham Trail including Lineham Cliffs and the south slopes of Mount Blakiston.

According to the Canada National Parks Act, anyone who is found not following the closure and in the area could face a maximum penalty of $25,000.
