During August, Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden has plenty of activities in store.
Nikka Yuko will be participating once again in the North American Japanese Garden Association’s “Gardens for Peace” initiative Aug. 5.
This meaningful celebration of peace and culture will include a story time session with Tad and Tomo about the origami paper crane and its powerful message of peace, an origami workshop to learn how to fold peace cranes and view the peace pattern in the dry rock garden designed by Hiroshima-based artist Toshiko Tanaka. Tanaka is a peace activist and an atomic bomb survivor and her pattern represents peace.
Marketing and Events Manager Eric Granson says every year the Association connects with gardens across North America to participate in different cultural activities to enhance peace initiatives, including the raking of the rock garden.
“We do a lot of things in the garden, but this is a nice time to come in and focus on tranquility, peace and serenity and to learn about the crane story, have some origami made and listen to some stories by one of our senior storytellers,” says Granson.
“It’s a lot of things to ground yourself and take in the peace and serenity the garden offers to so many people,” he adds.
Also in August, Nikka Yuko is hosting a Mezame (Awakening) Session Aug. 23. “It’s where we do yoga and sound bathing for a tranquil oasis experience for healing the soul,” notes Granson.
On Aug. 2, Nikka Yuko will host Shakespeare in the Garden featuring “Twelfth Night” and Anime Movie Night returns with “Kiki’s Delivery Service” Aug. 3.
