Taber’s annual cornucopia of corn-related corniness returns August 22 to 24. Cornfest is often touted as “the largest free family festival in Western Canada.”
“It’s always a big draw for the town. We see quite an influx of people. A lot to do. The corn is great again this year. There will be a lot of that on the grounds,” says Jared Bell, president of the Taber and District Chamber of Commerce.
“I was happy because I wasn’t sure what it was going to look like with a late start to the growing season, so everything is right on track,” adds Bell.
This year’s fun includes an arts and crafts market, a magic and comedy show, Cirque Works, the Full Send BMX Stunt Show, the Eagle Spirit Nest Community Tipi and the midway.
“We’ve got the BMX show going on, which is one we’ve had in the past and it’s awesome. They put on a great show and it’s great for the kids,” says Bell.
There will also be plenty of live entertainment on the main stage throughout the event.
“We have a whole bunch of bands. A pretty good mix of local and people from southern Alberta. That will be great to see,” notes Bell.
On August 23, don’t miss the cornbread contest, the chili cook-off and in-ring action from Pure Power Wrestling.
“The wrestling event has really gained some popularity over the last couple of years. We see some pretty big crowds for that,” says Bell.
On August 24, it’s the ultimate corn tasting, eating and stuffing competitions. The day will also feature a show and shine, a cornhole competition and fireworks.
“All in all, what people have come to expect at Cornfest and a few new things on top of that,” says Bell.
