Waste and Recycling Centre warns of increase in hazardous materials

Staff at the City of Lethbridge’s Waste and Recycling Centre have seen an increase in hazardous materials received from residential blue carts in recent weeks.

Multiple cans of bear spray have been found in the last week, with one can rupturing. This caused an evacuation of the recycling facility, with some staff feeling the effects of the spray.

As the camping and hiking season starts to end, you are reminded to take care when cleaning up gear from the past season. Propane tanks, bear spray and batteries are all considered hazardous materials and don’t belong in your blue, green or black carts.

Hazardous materials can pose a serious risk to staff when disposed of incorrectly. Hazardous household waste should never be placed in your carts and needs to be disposed of properly at the Waste and Recycling Centre in the designated area.

You can contact 3-1-1 to learn about where to dispose of waste. For more information on putting your waste in the right place visit curbside.lethbridge.ca.
