Visibility of crosswalks near schools is important to ensure the safety of children walking to and from school or during drop-off and pick-up periods.
The City of Lethbridge and Lethbridge School Divisions are working together to improve transportation safety in school areas. When drivers park in or near a crosswalk, it restricts the visibility of children crossing for all other drivers, significantly increasing the risk of a collision or serious injury.
Drivers are not to park or stop their vehicle within five metres of a crosswalk for any amount of time, especially during the drop-off or pick-up periods, as this is when pedestrian traffic is at its highest.
According to the City’s Traffic Bylaw 5834, the penalty for violation is up to $500 and a driver shall not stop or park their vehicle on a crosswalk or on any part of a crosswalk.
