Cardston RCMP is warning the public of a bail scam that has recently been used to target several families in the community.
According to police, a significant amount of money has been lost because of this scam, with the victims being contacted by the alleged fraudsters telling them a loved one has been arrested and being held on bail. Police say that the offenders contact the victims acting like they are a representative from either a law office or the courts and request bail money for the person they are representing. Police urge before you hand over any money to double-check the person’s story by contacting the local authorities, another member of the family or Foreign Affairs.
RCMP have reportedly identified the suspects in the most recent scams and are seeking warrants for their arrest.
According to a statement from RCMP, “The same suspects were recently arrested in Lethbridge on similar allegations.”
Police are asking anyone who believes they or someone they care about has been a victim of a scam to contact RCMP or Foreign Affairs.
