Residents in Taber can now apply for the Clean Energy Improvement Program.
The program offers a way for homeowners to invest in energy-efficient and renewable energy upgrades through affordable, long-term financing.
The CEIP is available thanks to a partnership between the Town of Taber, Alberta Municipalities, and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund, which is an endowment created by the federal government.
Home improvements that can be made by way of the program include installing solar panels, upgrading insulation, replacing windows and more. The CEIP provides financing that is repaid through the homeowners’ property taxes.
Additionally, an option is available to repay the loan in full at any time without penalty. The financing can also be transferred to the next owner if the home sells.
“This program is a great opportunity for homeowners to reduce energy consumption, and lower their utility costs,” says Blake Hranac, Facilities and Energy Manager.
“By offering a simple and flexible way to finance improvements at a low interest rate and long repayment terms, we hope to see many residents take advantage of this initiative.”
To participate, homeowners need to own an eligible property in Taber and begin the process by submitting a pre-qualification form at the Alberta Municipalities website to confirm their eligibility. The next step involves completing an EnerGuide Home evaluation, which officials say will help find the most energy-efficient or renewable energy upgrades for the home. The CEIP is designed to remove upfront cost barriers.
The Town of Taber says any local businesses that want to offer their services for the CEIP can apply to be listed as a ‘Qualified Contractor’ on the program website.
On top of financing, the CEIP in Taber offers a rebate of $400 for all completed projects. An extra $500 is available for projects that finance a Solar PV upgrade – for a total rebate of $900. Officials note the availability of rebates is limited and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
