Luxie Lifts is Lethbridge’s revamped safe ride program

Pronghorn Athletics is excited to announce the return of its beloved safe ride program, now with a new name unique to the University of Lethbridge – Luxie Lifts.

Offering a safe ride home to promote community safety, this initiative comes after a year-long hiatus due to challenges in securing insurance in time to run the program last season.

Executive Director for Pronghorn Athletics and Recreation Neil Langevin says the University’s student-athletes are eager to reconnect with the community and continue the legacy of safety and support the fundraiser established. “It’s not just about getting people home safely – it’s about fostering connections within the community and investing in our student-athletes’ futures.”

“Bringing Luxie Lifts to life has been a true community effort,” adds Taylor Penney, events manager for Pronghorn Athletics. “Working closely with the City of Lethbridge Transit and various departments within the U of L, including risk management, safety and communications, we’ve navigated the complexities of securing insurance and enhancing our service. This year, we’re excited to provide a more streamlined experience for everyone involved.”

Luxie Lifts will operate on select nights in November and December, offering safe rides home to community members. This entirely volunteer-run program features Pronghorn student-athletes at the forefront, ensuring safety on the roads – while directly benefiting them through donations collected from rides.

The success of Luxie Lifts heavily relies on community involvement. Local businesses have played an integral role through sponsorship and by providing food for volunteers. These contributions are essential for maintaining the quality and reach of Pronghorn Athletics programs.

“The support from our sponsors and the community has been tremendous,” notes Langevin. “It’s heartening to see how much people value this program and its impact on providing safe rides home during the holiday season, while supporting Pronghorn Athletics. We invite everyone to get involved— whether by volunteering or using our service — to help us make this season safer for all.”

For over 26 years, Operation Red Nose served as an essential community service, providing safe rides home during the holiday season. It was more than just transportation, it symbolized community spirit and safety, supported by approximately 350 volunteers annually — many of whom were Pronghorn athletes, coaches and their families. The program not only helped reduce impaired driving, but also raised significant funds for Pronghorn Athletics, supporting team travel, coaching, resources, equipment and more.

The Luxie Lifts call centre will be open to the public November 29-30 and December 6-7 and 13-14 from 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., during which a team of volunteers will assist in getting you and your vehicle home safely.

Additionally, Luxie Lifts offers pre-booked sponsorship packages for private holiday parties, ensuring your guests have a safe ride home – while contributing to a worthy cause.
