Car seat safety being highlighted by LPS in November

The Lethbridge Police Service and other law enforcement agencies across the province are educating people about the safe use of child car seats this month.

According to police officials, when car seats are properly used they can reduce motor vehicle-related injuries and death.

In Wild Rose country the law is kids who weigh 40 pounds or less have to be in a car seat, with smaller kids being put in a rear-facing seat. Police advise a child be moved to a forward-facing seat once they are at least two years old or they have reached the maximum 40-pound weight. Even though booster seats are not required by law, police encourage one to be used until a child can properly fit a seat belt.

Before a car seat is installed into a vehicle, it is encouraged to read the instruction manual and the car seat section of the vehicle owner’s manual. The fine for not having a child properly strapped into a car seat is $162.
