Drivers encouraged to keep space, vision, and speed top of mind when on winter roads

As southern Alberta, including the Lethbridge region, receives Mother Nature’s first gift of snow officials are reminding drivers to drive to the conditions.

The City of Lethbridge and AMA are sharing some winter driving tips to help keep drivers safe as we head into the heart of the winter driving season. Drivers are reminded to keep space, vision, and speed top of mind when heading out on city streets. Travelling at faster speeds makes it harder to make a quick stop, so it is advised to travel at slower speeds or at a speed that is adaptive to the weather conditions to help reduce the chance of losing control. It is also recommended to have a following distance of two to three seconds between vehicles in ideal conditions however when the conditions are less than ideal, it is suggested to have a distance of at least three seconds between vehicles.

Additionally, drivers are encouraged to keep an eye out for ice build-up at intersections, bridge decks and ramps.

City plows also are working to clear city roads and are sanding arterial roads, however, officials say it will take some time for sand to bond to the ice.
