Environment Lethbridge is offering hundreds of ways to have an eco-friendly holiday with its “2024 Green Gift Guide.”
If staring down a mountain of wrapping paper and boxes on Christmas morning makes you shudder, Environment Lethbridge’s ultimate guide has the solution with eco-friendly and low-waste gifts to keep loved ones happy, while keeping unnecessary trash out of the landfill.
“Waste reduction is doubly important over the holidays. Between the gifts and the parties and the food, it can be challenging to stay green,” explains Kathleen Sheppard, Environment Lethbridge’s executive director. “We’re not saying don’t buy gifts. The ‘Green Gift Guide’ simply offers suggestions to shift the focus away from buying more stuff towards gifting experiences and other low-waste options.”
Expanded from previous years, the guide has new ideas and a new section with suggestions specifically for kids.
Many of the ideas in the guide are about things to do, rather than things to buy. Classes, tickets and spa days are presented, alongside do-it-yourself options such as planning a fun night in or an adventure to a local park.
For those who aren’t quite ready to give up physical gifts entirely, the guide also offers tips and suggestions to keep the gift buying and wrapping as green as possible.
“Gifts don’t have to come with batteries,” says Sheppard. “We’re really hoping everyone will lean into the idea of creating memories, not waste, this holiday season. Whether it’s ski or gymnastics passes for your active kiddos or an art class for your mom, we’ve got you covered.”
