Anyone with young children or who drives with young children in their vehicle is being invited by Lethbridge Police to the Car Seat Check Stop.
Officers from the Traffic Response Unit will be in the east parking lot of Toys “R” Us on Wednesday, November 27th. From 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. these officers will use their training in child car seat safety to check and ensure car seats are properly installed, offer advice about installing car seats and answer questions drivers may have.
The Car Seat Check Stop is part LPS’s work this month to educate people about the safe use of child car seats as it is reported when car seats are properly used they can reduce motor vehicle-related injuries and death.
In Wild Rose country the law is kids who weigh 40 pounds or less have to be in a car seat, with smaller kids being put in a rear-facing seat. Police advise a child be moved to a forward-facing seat once they are at least two years old or they have reached the maximum 40-pound weight. Even though booster seats are not required by law, police encourage one to be used until a child can properly fit a seat belt.
Before a car seat is installed into a vehicle, it is encouraged to read the instruction manual and the car seat section of the vehicle owner’s manual. The fine for not having a child properly strapped into a car seat is $162.
