Accidental fatal drug poisonings claimed four lives in August

Five people are reported to have lost their lives to an accidental fatal drug poisoning in August.

According to the Alberta Substance Use Surveillance System, August saw four more lives lost to an accidental fatal overdose than July.

Between January and August of 2024, there were 38 accidental fatal drug-related poisonings reported in Lethbridge, all reportedly caused by non-pharmaceutical opioids.

Across Alberta, there were 94 deaths reported in August connected to opioid-related fatal drug poisonings and in the first eight months of the year, there have been 814 lives lost to accidental fatal drug poisoning.

As the happiest time of the year gets into full swing local authorities along with Mothers Against Drunk Driving are reminding drivers to not get behind the wheel impaired.
