Lethbridge Polytechnic set to host conference on irrigated crops

Once again, Lethbridge Polytechnic is teaming up with partners from across western Canada to host the Irrigated Crop Production Update.

The one-day event will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, January 23 at the Lethbridge and District Exhibition Agri-food Hub and Trade Centre.

Those wanting to attend must register ahead of time, with the early bird deadline set for Tuesday, December 24.

“Irrigation is such an integral part of the agricultural make-up in southern Alberta, and this conference is a great opportunity for industry and experts to come together to plan and think about what to expect in the coming months,” says Dr. Willemijn Appels, senior research chair with the Mueller Irrigation Research Group at Lethbridge Polytechnic.

“Continuing collaboration and partnerships will be key to overcoming challenges and ensuring a sustainable future for the agriculture sector.”

Despite the current snowpack and reservoir levels looking more promising than last year, Appels says it is still too early to predict spring moisture accurately.

The 2025 conference will feature presentations on different topics, including:

  • a farmer panel discussing their approach and management of water in 2024;
  • a keynote speaker who will address future trends and patterns for water availability in the Rocky Mountains and Canadian Prairies;
  • a session on irrigation scheduling and strategies; and
  • discussing pests and disease management for irrigated crops.

An applied research networking event from the Regional Innovation Network of Southern Alberta will follow the presentations. Attendees will be able to enjoy food and drinks while mingling and touring the tradeshow.

“Southern Alberta is a unique repository for agricultural knowledge, and sessions such as these showcase our combined ability to adapt and overcome significant challenges such as poor moisture conditions and drought,” says Dr. Andrew Dunlop, associate vice-president of applied research at Lethbridge Polytechnic.

“I look forward to the many conversations to be had in January as we look toward promoting a strong and sustainable agriculture sector.”

Additionally, for anyone interested in continuing education credits, the polytechnic has applied for Certified Crop Advisor and Pesticide Applicator credits for the session.

More information about the event is on the Lethbridge Polytechnic website.
