Following the Prime Minister’s announcement he is stepping down as Liberal party leader conservative MP’s, including Lethbridge’s, have shared they still want an election sooner than later.
In a statement to mylethbridgenow.com, Rachel Thomas says over the past nine years Liberal MPs have unanimously supported Justin Trudeau’s decisions. The local politician says the decision to prorogue Parliament is for the Liberal party’s “own sake.”
“Together, they doubled housing costs, hiked taxes, unleashed crime, broke Canada’s immigration system, and forced a quarter of the population into poverty,” Thomas says. “Liberal MPs are dumping Trudeau, not because they’ve had a change of heart, but because he is no longer popular enough to win an election and keep them in power.”
BREAKING NEWS!!!
Justin Trudeau has resigned but STILL isn’t letting Canadians have their say!
Canadians want an election. Trudeau wants a new Liberal Prime Minister that will continue his bad decisions.
Same tax hikes. Same deficits. Same housing crisis. Same disdain for…

Thomas’s colleague, Grande Prairie—Mackenzie MP Chris Warkentin echoed many of her sentiments when talking to our sister station mygrandeprairienow.com, adding that even though the Liberals have now put parliament on pause to find their next leader, the Torys will continue to push for an election.
“What we’re calling for, and what we’ve been calling for, is an election to allow Canadians to make a decision as to which direction they want to take the country, and what Justin Trudeau has announced is a plan to allow Liberals to decide who’s going to be the next Prime Minister,” Warkentin says.
Both MP’s say the PM’s decision is one that best serves the Liberals at this time, with what Thomas calls a focus on “saving their jobs and fighting each other for power, the country spirals out of control.”
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and
Bloc Québécois leader, Yves-François Blanchet all made statements Monday following Trudeau’s announcement, with all sharing some sentiment of wanting an election to be called sooner than later.
Provincial leaders including Danielle Smith and Doug Ford also addressed Trudeau’s announcement about stepping down. Both provincial leaders addressed President-Elect Donald Trump taking office on January 20th and the impact that is anticipated to have with Trump’s promise of tariffs on Canada being put in place on his first day in office.
In a post on X Smith says “Our country needs a Prime Minister and a government with a four-year mandate to address Canadians’ needs and effectively negotiate with the incoming U.S. administration.”
Even though the Conservative party is calling for an election the latest Canadians will head to the polls in October of this year.
