LPS highlighting intersection safety in January

Intersection safety is being put in the spotlight by local law enforcement throughout January.

Lethbridge Police officials say in 2021 one in four collisions reported in Alberta happened at an intersection. Across the province in 2021, 5,989 people were reported to have suffered an injury during a collision at an intersection and 42 people lost their lives.

According to an LPS release making an unsafe left turn and not stopping at a stop sign or red light are among some of the most common mistakes people make that can result in a collision at an intersection. Because of the tremendous impact a collision can have on those involved officials say “police have a low tolerance for those which occur at intersections.”

Police say technology such as red light cameras has helped reduce collisions and casualties by playing a part in drivers reducing their speed and stopping for red lights.

Officials say a combination of law enforcement and increased awareness while driving and making smart decisions can help improve intersection safety. This increased awareness includes leaving proper room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you, making sure it is safe to turn left before making the turn and driving to the road conditions.
