Saturday marks 60 years of Canada’s maple leaf flag

Saturday marks the 60th anniversary of the maple leaf flag being the official flag of the country.

City of Lethbridge Councillor Belina Crowson says the Canadian flag was confirmed and inaugurated in 1965. Crowson explains the two red bars on each side of the flag symbolize sea to sea and are a physical representation of “this amazingly great country that we have been willing to fight for generations, and we will stand up for today.”

“If you walk into a field of honour in a cemetery where you see where our veterans are buried, you will see the maple leaf on those soldiers’ graves, and what it stands for is the courage and the fight for freedom that has always been part of Canada, and it stands for this very amazing country,” Crowson says.

National Flag Day in Canada happens every year on February 15th.
