City officials calling foul on those feeding waterfowl

As geese and ducks begin to make their return to Lethbridge, officials are urging residents to put plans of giving them a ‘Welcome Back’ meal on ice.

According to a release from the City of Lethbridge, the warmer temperatures mean birds who went south for their winter migration are starting to return. However, according to city officials, large piles of food for the waterfowl were discovered along the shore of Henderson Lake near a sign that says not to feed wildlife, prompting a reminder.

Feeding the waterfowl human food is reported to possibly lead to several issues including having the animals become dependent on humans for food instead of scavenging for their own, overcrowding of the waterfowl habitats and bringing other species such as mice or rattlesnakes to the area to name a few.

According to a statement from the city, there are many ways that those wanting to help the community’s wildlife can, such as creating and supporting their natural habitat, having clean sources of water in the backyard and leaving naturalized spaces in the yard.

A statement from the city reads, “Let’s help keep our feathered friends healthy and thriving by respecting their natural diet and environment.”
