Tabletop roleplaying games popular in Canada, according to new survey

A new survey says 31.9 per cent of Canadians play or have played tabletop roleplaying games and/or wargames.

Dungeons & Dragons was the most popular game, followed by Kings of War and Star Wars X-Wing, according to the survey.

The survey notes almost one-in-four gamers had spent between $100-$199 on the hobby, followed by 22 per cent who had spent $200-$499.

The nationally representative survey studied over 1,000 Canadian adults.

The hobby is more popular with the young, with 50.4 per cent of 18 to 25-year-olds being tabletop gamers, followed by 45.3 per cent of 25 to 44-year-olds.

Men were slightly more likely to be tabletop gamers or used to in the past, with 39.6 per cent of men and 24.9 per cent of women saying they play a tabletop roleplaying game or wargame.

The survey also asked if respondents had spent money on other related media and merchandise, which the vast majority of Canadian gamers had.

Shirts, mugs, posters and home wares related to a tabletop franchise were the most popular at 31.1 per cent, followed by novels and comics at 28.6 per cent, statuettes and figurines (not intended for gameplay) at 25.8 per cent and movies and video games at 18.9 per cent.
