Review of Alberta’s electoral divisions underway

Alberta’s electoral divisions are up for review and consultations are set to start this spring.

The review will be done by the newly named Electoral Boundaries Commission and is made up of five people including the chair Justice Dallas K. Miller. The remaining members of the commission were nominated either by Premier Danielle Smith or NDP MLA and interim Leader of the Opposition Christina Gray. According to the provincial government, the review is done periodically to work towards fair and effective representation in Alberta.

Smith nominated Dr. Julian Martin of Sherwood Park and John D. Evans from the City of Lethbridge. Gray nominated Greg Clark from the City of Calgary and Susan Samson from Sylvan Lake.

In her nomination of Evans, Smith highlighted his work as both a managing partner and board chair at Stringam LLP, along with receiving a King’s Counsel designation back in March of 2020.

A full report from the commission will be put forward within seven months of its appointment and a final report will be put forward five months after that. Following these two reports a series of public hearings will be held. Using information from the reports and the hearings the commission will put forward a proposal to the Legislative Assembly for area, boundaries and names of electoral divisions.
